GLAM or SHAM: Olivia Palermo's New Ads For Mango

“When one door closes, another one opens” is a saying that seems to be ringing true for at least one of the former cast members from The City. Side note: If you haven't heard, news of The City's cancellation surfaced last week from Whitney Port's mouth via a radio interview she did with Ryan Seacrest. Olivia Palermo (i.e. the former b*tch from the show that we all love to hate) is featured alongside her model boyfriend Johannes Huebl in upcoming ads for fashion brand Mango.

Is it me, or does she look like really skinny in these ads? Or, maybe she was already really, really skinny and I just never noticed it?! However, I do love that shade of lipstick she’s rocking and that super sleek hair looks fab. And can I get a “Hallelujah, Amen!” that The City was cancelled?! I feel that it was one of the most horribly portrayed images of working in “the industry” ever. Believe me, Glamazons, it aint as easy as those gals made it look. (I still wonder who was paying their rent!?)

So, back to these Mango ads: do you think they look GLAM or is it just a SHAM?

Red Carpet Showdown: Fashion Looks From the 2010 MTV Movie Awards (And Why It's Ok For Sandra Bullock To Kiss Women In Public)

Hey Glamazons! Ok, I'll have to be honest here when I say that I didn't actually watch the MTV Movie Awards last night...I tried, but the Law & Order SVU Co-Ed Marathon that was on USA was waaaaay more interesting to me. However, I did have fun checking out last night's red carpet images. Who do you think looked the best? And what did you think of that onstage kiss Sandra Bullock gave Scarlett Johansson while accepting the MTV Generation Award?! Scandalous, yes, but in light of all the crap Bullock has been through this year, I think she can do no wrong. (It also helped that she looked super hot in that black Oday Shakar dress and Louboutin pumps.)
Never one to shy away from color, Katy Perry wore a blue wig, a jewelled Zuhair Murad mini dress and neon yellow nails.
Here she is on stage with Snoop Dogg during her performance for new single "California Girls." I know I live in NYC, but I love this song...such a fun, infectious beat!
Later, she changed into this form fitting dress (and hot pink nails!) for the official MTV Movie Awards after party she hosted.
Christina Aguilera killed it on the red carpet in this black frock by Versace Atelier. Love the chain detailing on this number!
And I definitely think the ruby red lips and uber glam hair 'do work well for her, too.
Here she is being sexy onstage (ie performing) in a bejeweled leotard that came complete with a light up crotch..gross.
Audrina Patridge shimmers in a one-shouldered silver mini. The best part of her outfit? Why, the shoes of course!
Patridge's Giuseppe Zanotti heels are giving me LIFE! I'm officially in shoe lust over these....
Stephanie Pratt looked lean (and tan!) in this one-shouldered neon min and super straight blonde hair extensions.
Back to her roots (literally), 'The City's' Whitney Port opts to rock this beige and yellow fitted dress by Yigal. Is it just me, or does she look way skinnier than she has in previous photos? (Or maybe she was already this skinny and I never noticed?) Hmmmm....either way, I DO like the dress....
Cameron Diaz showed off her super hot gams in this cute Diane Von Furstenberg watercolour print dress.
The Hilton sisters (ie Paris and Nicky) rocked the cutest mini dresses! Paris wore a cream colored Blumarine dress (loved the feathered detailing) and Nicky wore a turquoise knit dress by Missoni (that I've decided I need to add to my summer wardrobe in order to live).
For once I can honestly say Lindsay Lohan looked pretty classy in this 1970's inspired ombre beaded Pamela Roland jumpsuit (which effectively covered her SCRAM bracelet). I also loved her beauty look.
As you know, I live for eyeliner and love how she paired her heavily lined eyes with a pale pink lip. Very 1970's chic!
Scarlett Johansson is just a gorgeous creature. I'm in love with her green Dolce and Gabbana emerald lace dress and that tousled, wavy hair looks amazing on her. So, we can't be too mad at Sandra Bullock for kissing her on the mouth, right?!
Usually awkward and weird, I'm glad to see actress Kristen Stewart actually strike a pose and look alive. Maybe she's finally starting to have fun with her fame, now? Or, it could be that she's feeling herself in this metallic and tweed minidress by Dolce & Gabbana.
Jessica Biel looks prep-school pretty in this Giambattista Valli dress that features a sheer, white polka dotted top, frilly black skirt and pink bow at the waist. Even prettier? Why her hair and makeup of course!
Biel's tresses look sleek yet slightly tousled and she keeps her makeup look by sticking to a fresh face and pretty pale pink lipgloss. I did think her dress was a bit busy, but her simple (yet fab!) hair and makeup enable her to pull of the look.
If someone called me right now and invited me to an all-white party for the summer, I would definitely wear this Jenny Packham dress Vanessa Hudgens rocked on the red carpet last night. Everything about it is right.

Whitney Port, Olivia Palermo and Why Friendship and Business Might Not Mix

Whitney and Olivia in happier times.
If you're one of those intellectuals that only read books and never watch reality television, let me fill you in. On MTV's The City last week, emerging designer Whitney Port called on her "friend" Olivia Palermo at Elle Magazine in hopes of getting press for her new clothing line.

Since Whitney and Olivia worked together in the past, Whitney assumed that Olivia would be willing to support her latest endeavor. Wrong.

It's important to note that Whitney didn't expect Olivia to automatically love her work. However, if Olivia didn't like Whitney's clothes, she could've still helped Whit by...I don't know...giving her advice. Isn't that what friends do? Of course, the opposite happened.

Olivia begrudgingly attended Whitney's press appointment and then, talked smack about Whit's designs back at the Elle office. She even denied Whitney the perfect press opportunity: a Rue La La "New Designer" video interview on Elle.com. Tsk tsk tsk.

They were BFFs until business got involved.

But, as always, the plot thickened. Olivia's work nemesis, Erin, loved Whitney's clothes and pushed for Whitney to be interviewed against Olivia's wishes.

Not pleased, Olivia retaliates by not showing up on the day she's supposed to interview Whitney...on purpose. (And our favorite boss, Joe Zee, told Olivia off for ditching Whitney.)

That doesn't sound awful friendly to me.

This dramatic, catty reality TV scenario is sadly all too familiar. When it comes to business, friends can become overly competitive, jealous, negative and most of all, counterproductive.

On one hand, people feel that friendship and business should stay entirely separate. Friends, like Olivia, feel they don't owe their girlfriends any favors in the professional realm. I've seen friends withhold contacts from their girlfriends seeking jobs, decline writing recommendation letters, badmouth their friends to potential employers, the works.

Conversely, I feel that friendship and business can coexist under specific terms. I'm open to pulling friends up in any way possible. But there has to be a line so opportunists and users don't take advantage of my kindness. (Because as Kelly Cutrone says, "nice people end up on welfare.") I make a point to only help people that help themselves.

I do this without looking for something in return, but I do appreciate when a business favor is reciprocated. I am a firm believer in the saying "You scratch my back, I scratch yours."

To be sure, there are downsides to my way of thinking. I find you run into a lot of phony people who forge a connection in order to get "the hookup" by way of friendship. Also, there's the notion that everyone should work hard and pay their dues to get ahead instead of relying solely on favors.

Do you think Olivia is wrong for refusing to help, and even plotting to hinder, her friend's professional success? Do you help your friends professionally or do you keep business and friendship separate and why?

Fashion Week: Ports 1961 Fall 2010 with the cast of MTV's "The City"

Hey Glamazons!

So in just two weeks, Ferocia and I have walked into two tapings of MTV's "The City." Coincidence? I think not. Clearly, we need our own reality show! (MTV, call us). Just kidding, sort of.

The Ports 1961 show was quite the production behind-the-scenes with Whitney Port, Roxy and our good friend, Joe Zee taping for the reality show hit. The crew filmed them walking into the Promenade at Bryant Park (where the show was held) and absorbing the beautiful fashions.

And beautiful fashion, it was! Across the runway, Ferocia and I were in love with every exquisite piece. As I reported earlier, designer Tia Cibani took inspiration from "the relationship between discovery and invention." To that end, the collection was rooted firmly between "the classic and experimental." The menswear detailing, feminine shapes and rich color palette embraced tradition while the architectural silhouettes, innovative textiles and digital prints were surely a nod to the future.

My favorite pieces boasted stunning glazed jewelry in the form of a necklace or a jeweled detail on the shoulder that radiated beauty. Since Ports 1961 always delivers tailored, classic pieces, it was lovely to see Cibani incorporate the futuristic style du jour without sacrificing the brand's signature look. And the hair?! Big, fussy, wild curls that were to-die-for! The models looked free, modern and cool. Check out pics below.

On a more solemn note, the show started with a moment of silence for fallen fashion icon, Alexander McQueen. The whole fashion world is mourning the loss of a great talent. Check our tribute out here.

Stay tuned for more!

A Day in the Life: Elle Magazine and MTV's The City, Sonia Rykiel pour H&M with Chanel Iman

Hey Glamazons!

What a night. Ferocia and I are already tired and New York Fashion Week hasn't even started yet. The reason behind our sleep deprivation? A string of fabulous launches and parties that took place in the city yesterday evening, from the Guess by Marciano and Elle Magazine event to the Sonia Rykiel pour H&M knitwear launch.

Dressed in my Topshop military jacket, leggings and studded boots, I met up with Ferocia (in a cute ruffle top) at Sephora on Fifth Avenue to check out the limited edition Stella McCartney Stella perfume necklace (the perfect VDay gift! Ferocia will give you more on that later). After chatting with the fab PR rep and spraying on Stella (which smells amazing), we prepared to traipse through the NYC cold downtown for the Elle Magazine event.

Held at the Guess by Marciano store in Soho, the party drew out the glitteratti of the New York social scene. A handsome crowd of editors, bloggers, socialites and tastemakers mingled and sipped delicious cocktails (served by equally delicious and handsome waiters).

After breezing past the line, Ferocia and I walked inside and right into a taping of MTV's "The City." The MTV filming crew surrounded a gorgeous, fresh-faced Whitney Port (is she really that tall or am I really short?), her friend Roxy and...the sole reason I watch the show--Elle Magazine Creative Director, Joe Zee. I've followed Joe Zee's career for ages and think he's as talented as he is adorable. We took a picture together above. Don't you just want to squeeze his cheeks?

While MTV filmed, Ferocia and I made the rounds, running into some of our friends from POSHGLAM, MTV and Elle Magazine---and fans of the blog who we were so excited to meet! (P.S. if you ever see us out and about, please don't be scared to say Hi! We love to see the faces behind the comments).

Check out our pic with one of our fave publicists, Laura Hinds and Shaun Harrison of MTV. Yes, if you work in entertainment, wearing black is a requirement, lol. Fun times!

Next, we hopped into a cab and ventured to the Sonia Rykiel pour H&M knitwear launch. Held at Bobo, a swanky venue downtown, the party had a posh, Parisian vibe with dark, moody lighting and an intimate, well-dressed crowd. The party was hosted by Rykiel's daughter, Nathalie and celeb guests like Michelle Williams, Amanda Hearst and Leighton Meister and Kelly Rutherford of CW's Gossip Girl came out to show support.

Though I gave the knitwear a glowing Glamazon review last month, I found it to be even more chic, vibrant and wearable in person. I've got my eye on that pale pink sweater dress - very sexy sophisticate.

After seeing the clothes, we headed downstairs to check out a casually-dressed Chanel Iman spinning the tunes from Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" to Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real." With her boyfriend by her side, she kept people moving nonstop on the dance floor (maybe a new Solange-esque side hustle is in her future?).

Though we could have danced all night long, Ferocia had a editor event for Salvatore Ferragamo's new Women's fragrance this morning, and I had an interview scheduled with Marc Bouwer (the talent behind the dress Beyonce wore to the Heat launch party) this afternoon. Not to mention, that we're storing up all the sleep we can before the runway shows start.

Still, it was a fabulous night totally worth the cold...and the perfect way to start what promises to be a fun-filled Fashion Week!

Kisses,

Coutura
